China’s National Science Week hosts 1001 Inventions

Beijing, May 19 2019: 1001 Inventions, the award-winning British based science and cultural heritage organisation, launched today “Ibn Al-Haytham: Mysteries of How We See” educational event at the National Science Week of China. The event celebrates the International Day of Light (IDL2019), a global initiative proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to provide an annual appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture, arts, education, and sustainable development.

1001 Inventions participates for the first time at the National Science Week of China as part of the “Belt and Road International Science-Popularization Platform”. Through presenting lesser-known stories from the history of science, 1001 Inventions aims to raise awareness of the remarkable scientific and cultural contributions from countries along the ancient Silk Road. Apart from sparking interest in science, technology and innovation, 1001 Inventions also aspires to promote intercultural exchanges and connectivity between people in countries along the Belt and Road.

Participating children join a fun and educational journey to wondrous ancient times through the eyes of Ibn al-Haytham, the 11th century pioneer from Arabia who made remarkable contributions to the understanding of light, optics and vision. Children’s journey starts with the exciting short film, starring late legendary actor Omar Sharif, following the fascinating story of the brave young scientist.

The orientation film is followed by exciting demonstrations and engaging hands-on workshops led by 1001 Inventions global team of science explainers with the support of students from Beijing. Activities help raise awareness about light and its importance to diverse fields while introducing children to the principles of optics and vision. Children engage in fun demonstrations including exploring how we see using a camera obscura, learning how 3D glasses work and discovering the secrets of optical illusions.

Ibn al-Haytham was born around a thousand years ago in present day Iraq. This was the height of the golden age of Arabic science — a creative era that spanned a thousand years from the 7th century onwards, from Spain to China, bringing forth many far-reaching advances in science and technology by men and women of different faiths and cultures. Building upon knowledge of ancient civilisations, such as Greek, Ancient Egyptian, Persian, Indian, African and Chinese, the contributions of these pioneers made breakthroughs that led to significant and crucial value to the accumulation of scientific knowledge that still shape our world today.

The Ibn Al-Haytham global educational initiative was launched by 1001 Inventions in partnership with UNESCO in 2015 in celebration of the United Nations proclaimed International Year of Light. The global initiative engaged millions of people around the world with events at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, New York Academy of Science and the United Nations in New York, the Royal Society in London, the Jordan Museum in Amman, the Berlin Science Week and in many other cities around the world.

About National Science Week of China

The National Science Week was established upon approval by the State Council of China as a public-oriented activity on science and technologies. It has been organized by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology in the third week of May each year since 2001, with joint collaboration by various departments of the central government and local governments and the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China.  

“Belt and Road International Science-Popularization Platform” reflect the national proposals and the Belt and Road strategy. It is aimed at expanding and strengthening cooperation between countries along Belt and Road, and seeks continuous innovation and growth based on precious science-popularization related resources from the countries.
