Egyptian Prime Minister Announces 1001 Inventions Programme

National Educational Programme to launch in Egypt

Cairo, 11th November 2014: Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab today announced plans with the global educational organisation 1001 Inventions to deliver a national programme in Egypt aimed at raising public awareness of the scientific and technological heritage of Arab and Muslim Civilisation.

The announcement was made in Cairo at a special meeting between Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, Ahmed Salim, Producer and Director of 1001 Inventions, and Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director, Library of Alexandria. Other government officials as well as Hanan Dowidar, Senior Advisor to 1001 Inventions, also attended the meeting. The award-winning 1001 Inventions organisation creates and delivers global educational programmes through science exhibitions, festivals, schools and public initiatives that have engaged more than 200 million people.

Speaking on behalf of 1001 Inventions, Ahmed Salim said: “I’m truly honoured that 1001 Inventions will have the opportunity, under the auspices of Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, to launch a national programme aimed at engaging Egyptian youth and the general public. Egypt played a key role as a centre of excellence and learning during the Golden Age of science and technology in Arab and Muslim Civilisation. By celebrating the lives and honouring the struggles of those men and women of different cultures and faiths who contributed to helping to build the foundations of our modern world, we hope to inspire young people in Egypt to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and medicine.”

Hanan Dowidar, Senior Advisor to 1001 Inventions, further added: “Through experiential learning, the 1001 Inventions Programme aims at engaging the Egyptian community, particularly children and youth, in exploring science while sparking passion for creativity and innovation. The 1001 Inventions Programme will enrich the efforts of diverse Egyptian organisations that have been active over the past few years in communicating science to the public to build a culture that understands and supports the crucial role science plays in the economic and social well-being of society.”

The national educational programme will include touring interactive exhibitions, hands-on workshops, educational films, live shows and teaching resources, all of which will be provided in Arabic as well as English.

About Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina aims to be: A center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge and to be a place of dialogue, learning and understanding between cultures and peoples.
